It's time for Dining Month, presented by Deer District and its spooky Halloween-themed alter ego, Fear District. Throughout the month of October, we'll be serving up fun and fascinating content about all things food. The signature dish, however, is our 2019 Best of Dining poll, with winners getting dished out all month long. Get hungry, Milwaukee!
Kopp's Frozen Custard
Frozen custard may be in the name, but Kopp's still remains the king of the Brew City burger as well, landing at the top of our Best of Dining poll for the best burger for the umpteenth year in a row.
There are undoubtedly fancier or more unique burgers in Milwaukee's dining scene. Heck, the company behind Kopp's makes more gourmet burgers at their sister restaurant Elsa's Downtown. And yet, people just love that jumbo-sized, soul-warming, meaty, classic taste of the original Kopp's burger. Even the recent introduction of the KRK – the local chain's first new burger introduced in 67 years – and some mild chatter about new buns – couldn't slow down that classic burger's reign as Brew City's favorite.
Plus, being able to wash one of their tasty burgers down with a scoop or two of custard likely helps score a point in one's favor.
Though Kopp's continues to rule this category, the race was far from a one-restaurant sprint. Fellow Brew City burger institutions Oscar's and Sobelman's came in close, placing silver and bronze respectively, while the inventive Bay View burgers of Crafty Cow and the family-friendly fun of AJ Bombers rounded out the top five. Our own dining expert, however, went in a different direction with her burger of choice, feeling the burn of Foxfire's tasty offerings, while the OnMilwaukee editorial team went with a local burger legend in its own right: Nite Owl.
Runners-up:
2. Oscar's
3. Sobelman's
4. Crafty Cow
5. AJ Bombers
OnMilwaukee editors' pick: Nite Owl
Lori Fredrich's pick: Foxfire
