IndyCar is wheels up to Wisconsin, as the open-wheel auto-racing series announced this morning that it will return to the Milwaukee Mile Speedway next year for a multi-race weekend on Aug. 30 through Sept. 1.
The three-day Labor Day weekend series pitstop will showcase a doubleheader of NTT IndyCar Series races, hosted at the Milwaukee Mile at Wisconsin State Fair Park on Saturday and Sunday. The races will serve as the 15th and 16th stops on the 17-race 2024 NTT IndyCar Series season schedule. Exact times for the races have yet to be announced, but the Saturday race will be broadcast on Peacock while the Sunday race will air on USA Network.
The Labor Day weekend festivities next year will also include an Indy NXT race, the organization's developmental series for up-and-coming racers.
"I’m so proud of the relationship we have created with Penske Entertainment and want to thank the entire team, as well as Governor Evers and his administration, for helping us bring IndyCar back to the historic Milwaukee Mile," said Shari Black, CEO and Executive Director of State Fair Park, in a release. "We look forward to a great event over Labor Day weekend that will include a larger footprint at State Fair Park than races in the past. This will allow for exciting programming, expanded food and beverage options and ultimately offer a high-energy, family-friendly event weekend for racing fans."
The 2024 doubleheader weekend is the first IndyCar race in the newly announced multi-year agreement between the auto-racing series and the Milwaukee Mile to bring competitions to the historic racing oval, which has hosted more than 100 IndyCar races since its first open-wheel race in 1939. Next year's event will mark the first IndyCar series race at the Milwaukee Mile since 2015.
The newly announced agreement serves as yet another step toward a return to racing prominence for the Milwaukee Mile, which also hosted its first NASCAR race since 2009 just last month: the Clean Harbors 175 in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series on Aug. 27.
“There is such a great tradition and history of IndyCar racing at the Milwaukee Mile, and we are excited to build on that legacy with a Labor Day weekend NTT IndyCar Series doubleheader beginning in 2024,” said Roger Penske, Chairman of Penske Corporation, in the release. “We appreciate all the loyal and passionate IndyCar fans in Milwaukee and across the state of Wisconsin and thanks to our partnership with the Wisconsin State Fair Park, we can’t wait to return to the Mile next season."
Tickets for next year's Labor Day IndyCar doubleheader weekend are expected to go on sale in January. In the meantime, fans can sign up for updates as well as more information at the Wisconsin State Fair Park's website.
As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.
When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
