Though you wouldn't believe it looking outside today, May typically means the start of summer – or at least the summer movie season, with blockbusters like "Guardians of the Galaxy 3," "The Little Mermaid," "Fast X" and more coming to the big screen in just this coming month alone. But it'll feel like summer movie season on your small screen too this month thanks to Netflix and its latest batch of new arrivals.

For instance, some of the biggest comedy hits of the past several decades – the "Austin Powers" movies, "Pitch Perfect" and "This Is the End" – will help you laugh away this non-starter of a spring thus far. (Or laugh away the fact that the Big Red Streaming Monolith is killing off its DVD service, destroying one of the better available libraries out there as well as destroying the former promise of Netflix as a one-stop shop for films of all kinds.) And for chuckles safe for all ages, there's "The Croods" and the stop-motion animation triumph that is "Chicken Run."

Miss the recent Tom Hanks tearjerker hit "A Man Called Otto" in theaters? Now you've got a second chance – just brace your tearducts. Prefer screams over sobs from your movies? Netflix will scare up the original viral sensation "Paranormal Activity" along with the zombie great "Dawn of the Dead" during May – along with Oscar-nominated smashes like "American Gangster," "Black Hawk Down," "Captain Phillips," "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" and "Traffic."

As for the complete opposite of Oscar favorites, a bunch of Arnold Schwarzenegger movies ("Conan the Barbarian," "Kindergarten Cop," "Last Action Hero") will blow up the Big Red Streaming Monolith as well. And if there's a bunch of movies from a particular star or director coming to the streamer, that must mean they've got an Netflix Original en route – lo and behold, "FUBAR," a new Arnie action-comedy show, will drop in May too. Brace your TV's sound system for explosions upon explosions.

That's just the start of what's coming to Netflix this month – I didn't even get to original projects like the new J.Lo action thriller "The Mother," spin-offs for "Bridgerton" and "To All the Boys," and fresh seasons of "Selling Sunset" and "I Think You Should Leave." So let's just get into it: Here's the rest of the slate coming to your couch this May.

Matt Mueller Culture Editor

As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.

When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
