Bacon and running are two words that typically don't go well together, but avid runner and event coordinator Chris Ponteri had a dream. A dream to make running fun and a dream to race for bacon.
The Race For Bacon isn't the first event he created that incorporates running with off beat themes. Ponteri has been a essential in helping to create and organize the Ice Breaker Indoor Marathon and Half Marathon at the Pettit National Ice Center for the last five years. The Ice Breaker will once again be back in January 2014.
Ponteri has also helped create The Great MKE Race, which incorporates solving clues and performing wacky challenges around Milwaukee. He also has plans for a beer race and run on Candy Cane Lane during the holiday season.
If you are a bacon lover, Race For The Bacon is your event. The first 125 finishers will get bacon. The top three male and female winners will get bacon. The auction winners will get bacon. This year's Bacon Bash will be catered by Chef Oz at Emerald City Catering.
The Bacon Bash after the race will include bacon, ham and turkey club Sandwiches, BLT Dip with Corn Chips plus beer, soda and water. There will be over 500 pounds of Patrick Cudahy Bacon given away at the event. In fact, if you are running the Bacon Race, you can get bacon at the halfway mark of the run.
The Race For Bacon happens Thursday, Aug. 1, at 6:30 p.m. in Sheridan Park. The fee is $40 and a limited number of Bacon Bash tickets will also be available for $15. Go to baconrace.com for more information.
In today's Kramp Cast I talk to Chris Ponteri about the Race For The Bacon 5k, how he got the idea for the event, what other fun races he's organizing and of course we talk bacon. Enjoy!
