Ice skating is no fun with dull-bladed skates, so get them sharpened every year at one of these local places.

It’s quick, cheap and will greatly improve your speed and agility. Sharp blades also make the hot cocoa taste better after the rink time. Actually, that’s not true, but sharpen ‘em anyway.

Bliffert Hardware

Bliffert is one of the last – if not the last – hardware store in Milwaukee that sharpens skates. The cost is $12. Drop them off and pick up within a day or two.

Hours: Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Hockey Locker

Hockey Locker sharpens hockey and figure skates while you wait. It’s $15 for new skates and $5-7 to resharpen skates.

Hours: Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

For new skates, never-sharpened or very rusty skates, the price is $15. Otherwise it's $7.

The cost to sharpen skates at Wilson Ice Arena is $6.

Hours: Monday-Thursday from 2 to 8 p.m.; Friday from noon to 10 p.m.; Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
